  • Practiced the specialty of Periodontics in the Portland Metropolitan area since 1993.
  • A board certified diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
  • A board certified diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
  • Has over twenty years of experience in the surgical placement of dental implants and bone reconstruction.
  • A previous faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
  • Currently a part time faculty member for the Department of Periodontology at the Oregon Health Sciences University. He was previously the head of the departmental dental implant program. He was also the director for the departmental research program which was focused on research related to implantology.
  • Completed his Ph.D. in 1993 involving research centered on techniques to improve surgical wound healing.
  • Completed a residency in Periodontics in 1992 at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, TX .
  • Obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1988 at the University of Washington.
  • Is an esteemed national and international lecturer on implantology and periodontics. Lectures have been given to local, national and international audiences.
  • Has published over twenty manuscripts in professional journals and has written 3 book chapters.
  • In 2006 received the American Academy of Periodontology Earl Robinson Regeneration Award.

Periodontal Technology Leader:


Dr. McAllister has been a leader in the fields of implant reconstruction and periodontal therapy for many years. This has translated to excellent care for the patients employing the best of equipment, materials and treatment. Some of the key advances are summarized below:


  • In 1999 Dr. McAllister was one of the first to bring digital X-rays into his practice. In 2006 still less than 25% of practices reported using this advanced technology. Digital radiography has reduced radiation exposure to the patient, allowed for more accurate implant treatment planning and allowed for real time radiographs during implant surgery to enhance outcomes.

  • In 2003 Dr. McAllister was one of the original 8 research centers to evaluate and bring the first growth factor through the FDA, for use in periodontal regeneration surgery. PDGF is now widely employed to enhance outcomes in periodontal and implant reconstructive procedures.

  • In 2005 Dr. McAllister was the first in Oregon to bring a cone beam CT scanner into his office. This technology has meant less radiation to patients compared to conventional medical CT scan units and reduced travel and cost requirements to obtain a CT Scan. This technology has also dramatically improved the ability to see bone defects and vital anatomic structures for improved implant reconstruction treatment planning.

  • In 2007 Dr. McAllister was the first to introduce allograft Stem Cell bone grafting technology to dentistry. While this technology had enjoyed several years of excellent results from orthopedics, he initiated controlled evaluation in several dental applications (see manuscripts). This product is now routinely used for periodontal and implant reconstruction to eliminate the need for harvesting the patients own bone. This translates to less surgical time and dramatically reduced post operative pain to the patient.

  • In 2010 he became the first private practice in the United States to initiate placement of the new anatomically shaped Astra Profile implant. Over the last 10 years Dr. McAllister has assisted in designing newer implants with anatomic shapes that help hold the bone around the implant to give a more esthetic end result, especially in cases of adjacent implants.

  • Dr. McAllister lectures world wide on these and other advances he has been involved with. His interactions with the most talented surgeons world wide has advanced his own treatment at home where his patients enjoy his top quality care.
