a close up of a mouth with inflamed gumsPeriodontitis is a type of severe disease that affects the gum causing severe inflammation of the tissues. Common symptoms of gum disease include swollen, red, or bleeding gums. If you leave the symptoms of periodontitis unattended, they can cause tooth loss. However, there is a way you can prevent all that from happening. Periodontitis is preventable through flossing and regular brushing of teeth. Also, if caused by other reasons, there are effective treatments such as surgery for severe cases and dental cleaning for minor instances.

Swollen , reddish and publish gums

When touching healthy gums, they are usually firm and fit snugly around the teeth. In comparison, symptoms of periodontitis are swollen gums, tender gums, purplish or reddish gums, loose teeth, pain when chewing or bleeding gums, and much more. When you have healthy gums, brushing should not engage any bleeding. However, when suffering from periodontitis, you are swollen, tender, and reddish gums, resulting in bleeding if touched by a toothbrush.

Bad Breath

Periodontitis causes bad breath in some individuals. If you constantly start experiencing bad breath, then this could mean that you could be having gum disease. Even after brushing your teeth and flossing properly, you still feel the bad breath coming from your mouth; the problem could be that you already have gum disease.

Deeper Gums and Loosening Of Teeth

With time, if the swollen tender gum is left without treatment, it leads to deeper gums which lead to loosening of the teeth, and later a tooth or teeth are lost. Hence, to prevent losing your natural teeth, maintain good oral hygiene, which is found to be the main cause of periodontitis. In cases of other reasons, seek treatment as early as now to prevent later consequences. Besides, the aftermath can be very expensive, such as having loose teeth and losing your teeth.
