Periodontitis Symptoms and Treatment

Periodontitis – Symptoms and TreatmentPeriodontitis is a serious infection of the gums that damages the soft tissue of the gums. When left untreated, the condition could lead to serious complications, such as the loosening or loss of teeth. In more serious cases, it could result in destroying the bone that provides support to the mouth, thus making it virtually impossible to eat or speak.

Periodontitis is Preventable

While periodontitis is not something to take lightly, the good news is that it’s entirely preventable and treatable, provided you get timely treatment. Since periodontitis is caused by poor oral hygiene, brushing twice a day and flossing can greatly improve the chances of a successful treatment.

Symptoms

Healthy gums are pale pink and fit firmly around the teeth. However, with periodontitis, the patient’s gums could become puffy and swollen. It is also common for the gums to feel tender, and the gums also tend to bleed easily, even while brushing your teeth. If you notice the formation of pus between your gums and teeth, that is also a telltale sign of gum infection and should be checked immediately by a dentist.

When is a Good Time to See Your Dentist?

While the condition is preventable, if the symptoms persist and make it painful to chew or swallow food, it is advised to see the dentist before these symptoms escalate. As your personal dentist, we will recommend the best periodontic treatment and will recommend a schedule for regular checkups to monitor your progress. The sooner you seek help from a dentist, the better your chances will be to reverse the damage that has been caused by periodontitis.
